How to Upload New Style Guide to Endnote
An output mode (or bibliographic style) is a template that tells EndNote how to format the citations in a manuscript or bibliography. EndNote includes over 2,800 automatically-created output styles (APA, AMA, NLM, Vancouver, Chicago, etc.).
This guide discusses using output styles to format bibliographies, editing existing styles and creating new ones. Styles can also be downloaded from http://www.endnote.com/back up/enstyles.asp. Come across the EndNote User Guide or the Help tab in the EndNote toolbar for boosted information.
Editing existing styles
To edit an existing style, outset brand a re-create of the fashion to exist modified:
- Admission the style manager window past selecting Output styles from the Tools tab menu and choose Open Manner Manager
- From the style manager window, select the format to be edited and click on the Edit button. This will phone call upward the mode window (below case: APA format)
- Select the Relieve Every bit option from the File carte. Give the style a new name.
Options relevant to only 1 of these types are listed nether the appropriate blazon of reference. Commendation options apply to citations in the torso of the text; Bibliography refers to the bibliographies that are created past EndNote; Footnotes refer to the citations entered into the footnotes of a Word document; under Figures and Tables, Tables refer to images inserted from the Paradigm field in the Nautical chart or Table reference type and Figures refers to images inserted from the Image field of any other EndNote reference type.
The list on the left side of the window includes all options that can be modified. The start four options are relevant for citations, bibliographies, and footnotes:
Virtually this mode: In this option, add together a description and category for this mode.
Anonymous works: In this option, indicate how EndNote should handle references where the author field is blank (not "bearding").
Page numbers: Indicate how page numbers should exist handled (full or abbreviated, or first folio only, etc.)
Periodical names: Indicate how journal names should exist handled (full or abbreviated, which abbreviation, etc. Come across to a higher place for information near the periodical term list, which is integral to this preference).
Working with style templates
For each reference type in a style, at that place is a way template (come across beneath), which is a string of fields and codes that tells EndNote how to display the data in a reference.
To open up a template:
- Click on Edit
- Click on Output Styles
- Click on Open Style Manager
- Select the style to be edited
- Select Edit from the left-hand menu
The template for a journal article in APA format is shown below and enlarged. Annotation the field names (Author, Title, Journal, etc.), the traditional punctuation (periods and commas), and the unusual punctuation (characters for special formatting). Templates can exist modified past adding or deleting fields, punctuation, spaces, etc. New reference type templates can as well be created.
Some rules for working with templates:
Basic dependence: any text or punctuation not separated by an ordinary space is dependent on the next field. This means that the text/punctuation will only brandish when there is data in the field. In the instance above, the parentheses around the (year) will only exist displayed when in that location is a year to brandish. If two fields are adjacent to text or punctuation, the preceding field takes precedence.
Spaces: The first space following a field is dependent on that field. Boosted spaces are contained.
Independent text: Independent text (text not from a field) e'er appears in the bibliography.
Font formatting: To format a field, such every bit journal or book titles, but highlight the field and select Style from the Text card. Options are underline, italics, boldface.
Special characters: All of these special characters can be added by using the Insert Field push.
Not-breaking infinite (gray diamond) – The EndNote manual refers to the non-breaking space as "bibliographic formatting glue," meaning that information technology joins two or more items together so they act every bit a single unit of measurement. Any text or punctuation "glued" to a field will non be displayed if the field is empty. In a formatted bibliography, it will display as an ordinary infinite.
Forced separation (vertical bar, pipe, |) – This is used to break dependence. In the example above, the forced separation after Pages will cause the period to be displayed whether or not there are pages in the reference.
Field names as contained text (emphasis grave, `) – This is used around independent text that could exist misinterpreted every bit a field characterization, such as `Editor`.
Atypical/plural separator (caret, ^) – This tin can be used to specify singular and plural forms of independent text, such as Ed.^Eds.
Creating an annotated bibliography
With the exception of the Annotated style, EndNote's output styles create bibliographies without including abstracts or annotations. To create an annotated bibliography for any output style:
First, create a copy of the style to annotate and open it (see editing existing styles in a higher place)
Select Bibliography > Layout from the menu; notice in that location is data for Kickoff each reference with and Cease each reference with. Data telling EndNote to add an annotation volition be added in the field labeled Finish each reference with. In the screen shots below, data for adding the abstracts has been entered. The general format is every bit follows:
- Brainstorm with clicking on the Insert Field push button and selecting Cease of paragraph; this starts the note on the following line
- Click on the Insert Field button and select Link side by side text [Note: this is a not-breaking infinite that links adjacent text to a field and so text won't appear if the field is empty.]
- Click on the Insert Field button and select Tab (if the starting time line of the note need to be indented)
- Click on the Insert Field button and select the desired field (abstract, notes, etc.)
- Click on the Insert Field button and once again select Link adjacent text
In the illustration below, the Abstract field was chosen, but the Notes field could also have been added; select whichever field in which the annotations are stored. Select a hanging indent selection equally desired.

Modifying In-Text Citations

Sometimes text needs to exist added or deleted from this standard format. Practise not make the edits to the citation directly because these changes volition be lost if the document is reformatted.
In Word, under the EndNote Tab, select Edit & Manage Commendation(south)… In the dialog box (illustrated higher up), select the citation that you lot desire to modify, and make the changes in the dialog box.
- Exclude author: Omits the author(due south) name from the formatted citation
- Exclude year: Omits the date from the formatted citation
- Prefix: Enter words that should be included before the commendation, such as see also. Include relevant infinite, such as the one later the prefix.
- Suffix: Enter words that should be added later the citation.
- Pages: Usually used with straight quotations. Enter the page numbers that you lot are citing. To encounter these, the output style may need to be modified to include cited pages in the citation template (see to the right).
Yous can also add together or remove references from a multi-reference commendation, such every bit (Jones, 1999; Smith, 2003), using the Insert… and Remove… buttons. The upwardly and down arrows can exist used to change the guild of display.

When a commendation is selected and the Reference tab is clicked on the View Pane (see below) volition display fields which tin be edited: add folio numbers, exclude author/s, format bibliography (change way, line spacing) etc. Click exterior the edit window to save changes.
